Microlite Announces Second Generation Linux Crash Recovery

Las Vegas, NV - November 15, 1999

Microlite Corporation is pleased to announce the availability of the second major release of RecoverEDGE for Linux , the first fully integrated, configurable crash recovery solution for the Linux operating system.

RecoverEDGE for Linux now creates bootable CD-Recordable (CD-R) and HP OBDR? bootable tape media for the first time in any Linux based recovery product.

This second generation product also incorporates significantly improved system, host adapter and module detection and support, and has been fully tested to ensure compatibility with newer Linux releases such as Red Hat 6.1.

RecoverEDGE for Linux works along with the award winning BackupEDGE Data Archiving System to provide four major benefits to users and administrators:

  • Crash Recovery - downed systems can be restored to service in two simple steps: solve the problem that caused the crash; boot the RecoverEDGE media (diskette, CD-ROM or OBDR tape), reconfigure filesystems and restore all the data from a BackupEDGE backup.
  • System Reconfiguration - RecoverEDGE allows users to easily replace hard drives if they've outgrown old ones, or to resize filesystems to reallocate space.
  • Disk Optimization - RecoverEDGE makes it easy to erase fragmented data and restore files in a contiguous, optimally accessible manner.
  • Remote Access to Crashed Systems - administrators may connect to systems via telnet or modem from anywhere in the world, even when the hard disk is not bootable.

Major Features - RecoverEDGE for Linux:

  • No "image" or "special" backups required. Crash Recovery is done from standard live BackupEDGE attended or unattended system backups.
  • Creates bootable recovery floppy diskettes, CD-Recordable media, or OBDR bootable backup tapes. All media may be created on the local system, or on any other Linux or Unix system on the network.
  • Full, friendly user interface - no shell prompts or specialized Linux knowledge required.
  • System discovery process detects required and available kernels and libraries automatically.
  • Recognizes, configures and recovers all disk devices on all host adapters.
  • Enhanced partition interface allows easy drive configuration without being an FDISK expert.
  • Drives may be switched between host adapters easily. System files such as
/etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf are adjusted as necessary by RecoverEDGE.
  • " One Touch Restore " rebuilds systems to same sized or different sized hard drive easily. Filesystems are scaled automatically.
  • Recovery data may come from the local tape drive, or from a tape or other data source installed anywhere on the network.
  • Remote administrators can telnet or modem into the crash recovery media and take over a disaster recovery session from anywhere in the world. This feature is often used by corporate administrators to debug and fix problems without resorting to an actual data rebuild.

"Reliability is in the details!" said Tom Podnar, President of Microlite Corporation. "We have the best crash recovery software because we thoroughly analyze the configuration of each system before creating bootable media. Users don't need to be Linux system experts; we've already done the engineering. Quite simply, nothing else does local or remote crash recovery as easily, and with as many media choices, as RecoverEDGE."

Major Features - BackupEDGE 01.01.07:

  • Dramatically improved user interface.
  • Reliable, high performance backups with full bit-level data verification.
  • Character menu and command-line based Fast File Restore, for local or remote devices, plus graphical point & click local Fast File Restore.
  • Seamless administration of local and remote systems.
  • Low level SCSI tape and auto-changer support, for local and remote devices.
