Microlite Announces Linux, Unix Backup/Recover Support for Panasonic DVD-RAM Drive MILPITAS, CA/ALIQUIPPA, PA (July 10, 2001) -- Panasonic
and Microlite Corporation today announced that Microlite's newly enhanced version of BackupEDGE fully supports the Panasonic 4.7GB DVD-RAM drive in Linux, UnixWare and
OpenServer operating environments. With BackupEDGE and the Panasonic rewritable DVD drive, users can have full system backups, instant access to archived files, and complete crash
recovery using highly reliable, low-cost DVD-RAM media. "DVD-RAM has the potential to revolutionize the design process when it comes to SMB servers and systems for replicated sites," said Tom Podnar, president of Microlite Corporation. "In many instances, a single device can replace
both the CD-ROM drive and the tape drive. With the media's ability to provide more than 100,000 write/rewrites cycles, it's a very cost-effective solution. And with BackupEDGE, it
becomes a plug and play solution under both Linux and Unix." By combining BackupEDGE with the Panasonic DVD-RAM drive, users have a well-integrated solution and an exceptionally low
storage cost. With internal data compression, they can store up to 9GB of data per side on a 4.7GB single-sided disc for less than a penny per Megabyte. The random access capabilities of DVD-RAM media combine with the
BackupEDGE indexing system to allow access to any file on a DVD-RAM archive in under a second. Offering fast, easy installation, BackupEDGE gives users the
flexibility of attaching the rewritable DVD drive to the local host or to any Unix or Linux system on the network. The system's re-designed scheduler also allows any number of full
or partial system backups to be performed to any device on the network. "Microlite's BackupEDGE is widely recognized for its speed and flexibility," said Dana Berzin, DVD product manager for Panasonic Industrial Company's Global Computer Group. "It
leverages all of the strengths of the DVD-RAM architecture. For backups, the DVD-RAM drive provides the low storage cost of tape but substantially greater reliability and longevity. For
restoration of files or archives, it works like a high-speed, random access hard drive. These features are further enhanced with BackupEDGE's crash recovery capabilities
which enable users to boot the DVD-RAM like a CD-ROM drive." BackupEDGE includes RecoverEDGE crash recovery software for Linux, UnixWare and OpenServer systems. With the
software's crash recovery capabilities, each backup can become a self-contained crash recovery solution enabling bare-metal recovery of crashed systems without the necessity of
re-installing the operating system before restoring data files. RecoverEDGE expands the traditional boot floppy/backup tape crash recovery model by combining backup data and crash
recovery information on each DVD-RAM backup disc. The user may boot directly from the DVD-RAM backup into the RecoverEDGE crash recovery menu system in the event of a data catastrophe.
In all instances, the boot media have network and modem-based remote access capabilities and are capable of restoring systems from network attached storage devices.
Pricing, Availability BackupEDGE 1.2 with DVD-RAM support is scheduled to ship in August 2001. The SCSI DVD-RAM device is supported by BackupEDGE
under Linux, UnixWare and OpenServer. Linux users may also choose the ATAPI drive. A fully functional Technology Preview copy is available now from the Microlite Corporation web site at http://www.microlite.com/preview. Panasonic Industrial Company's 4.7GB OEM DVD-RAM drive is
available as an internal drive with a SCSI-2 interface (model LF-D291N) or with an ATAPI interface (model LF-D211V). The Panasonic-branded internal drive, model LF-D201U, is available
from Panasonic Digital Document Company (PDDC) and has an MSRP of $549. Double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM media, 4.7GB single-sided media and 4.7GB bare disc media, which are
marketed under the Panasonic brand name, are also available from several other leading manufacturers. The 4.7GB bare disc DVD-RAM media can be played back on the latest Panasonic
DVD-ROM drives, as well as Panasonic's new DVD Player and DVD Recorder.
