Microlite Adds Strong Encryption to BackupEDGE 2.0 Backup and Disaster Recovery Software for SCO OpenServer 5 and UnixWare 7

LAS VEGAS, NV - SCOForum 2003 (August 18, 2003) -- Microlite Corporation today announced BackupEDGE 2.0, the latest release of its award winning backup and disaster recovery software for UNIX. This release provides the highest possible security for archived data by employing standards-based encryption.

"The need to maintain confidentiality of client and patient data, and of methods, systems and business practices critical to the success of an organization, is becoming increasingly apparent," said Tom Podnar, president of Microlite Corporation. "It doesn't matter how hard a client works to secure their privileged data if someone can simply walk off with a backup tape or disc and read the information at their leisure".

"SCO OpenServer and UnixWare based systems are trusted to store and manipulate terabytes of the world's most critical data," said Jeff Hunsaker, SCO Senior Vice President, Worldwide Marketing. "They are powerful, reliable and easy to secure. BackupEDGE 2.0 provides 'last mile' protection for these systems by both archiving the data and safeguarding the privacy of the archived information. And Microlite's world-renowned recovery capabilities minimize downtime in the event of a hardware failure or other disaster."

BackupEDGE 2.0 employs its own cryptographically strong random number generator and a powerful combination of symmetric and asymmetric algorithms to encrypt and decrypt archived data. It is completely standards-based, and the methodology will be published on our web site to assure users that standards are being followed and that no "back doors" or other security holes are in place.

  • Individual archives are protected by separate, randomly generated 256 bit AES encryption keys, which are in turn protected by a 2048 bit RSA key pair. Encryption is fully integrated into the product and performed at the file level, providing the following benefits...
  • Only data that needs to be protected is encrypted.
  • Overall performance stays high as only critical files are subject to CPU intensive encryption.
  • Full compatibility with our bit-level verify, file checksum verify, indexing, quick file access and disaster recovery features is maintained.
  • Each encrypted file is pre-compressed to ensure that no space is lost due to the inability of tape hardware compression implementations to compress encrypted data.

Other new features designed into BackupEDGE 2.0 include an improved data format, more powerful software compression, support for virtually unlimited pathnames, and advanced file checksum verification capability to complement its already powerful bit level verification.

About BackupEDGE 2.0

Microlite BackupEDGE 2.0 provides backup and disaster recovery capabilities across a wide variety of UNIX systems, including all SCO Group products. Archives may be created on tape, DVD or CD media, with no special device drivers required. Full tape autoloader/changer/library support is included at no extra cost. More details about BackupEDGE 2.0 are available on the Microlite Corporation web site.

BackupEDGE 2.0 also includes the RecoverEDGE bare metal disaster recovery system for OpenServer 5 and UnixWare 7. With this system, users can create emergency boot media specific to each system on DVD, CD, or floppy diskette. In the event of a data disaster, the user can simply resolve the problem, boot from their RecoverEDGE media, and automatically configure their hard drives and restore their system from their last backup.

Availability

BackupEDGE 2.0 release 02.00.01 will be available this month worldwide from UNIX resellers and value-added distributors. Prices start at $90.00(US) for personal or non-commercial use and $300.00 for commercial licenses. Encryption is an optional supplement for commercial licensees. Evaluation copies may also be downloaded immediately from the Microlite Corporation web site at www.microlite.com.
