Microlite Corporation is proud to announce Microlite BackupEDGE release 01.01.06, our new fully year 2000 compliant release featuring
Fast File Restore. For the first time in a low cost backup package, users may launch a graphical user interface, point and select any number of files or directories, and restore them as quickly as the tape
device can position to the proper spot or spots on the tape.
Many SCSI tape drives, such as DDS drives, DLT drives, AIT drives, and newer Travan NS8 and NS20 drives, can position to a particular spot on a tape far
faster than simply reading and discarding data until the proper file is encountered. They do take a few seconds to get into and out of locate mode, however.
Fast File Restore
is an intelligent, highly optimized system. Users are asked to run a test program on their tape drive. The test determines how far two points on a tape must be to make it faster to switch to a locate command, as opposed to simply reading and discarding data between the two points. When restoring files from different spots on the tape,
BackupEDGE automatically determines the fastest sequence of commands necessary to restore the appropriate data.
The Fast File Restore
interface is also quite useful on older tape devices that cannot perform fast locate commands. When using the graphical point and select interface, appropriate links and symbolic links to the chosen files are also identified and selected. This makes it simple to choose exactly the right data to be restored, even if it takes a little longer. The tape will stop and rewind as soon as the last selected file has been restored.
